Steve: "The Manner Of The Defeat Hurts"

21 March 2015

Steve Davis gives us his post-match reaction after disappointing display

He added: "We didn't play at a high enough tempo and have the levels of energy and that suited them. I think the ball spent more time out of play than in play today and we have got to be better than that at home."

"Then their goal has come from what was really their own clear chance of the entire game, so in the main we defended well. The centre-halves were fine and I thought Ollie kept going and was fine. Greg also did well on his return after missing the last two games , but we were not at it in terms of creativity.

"We were looking for those knockdowns off of Haber and nothing really dropped for us today. I thought we would create a lot more than we did and that is the most disappointing thing because we didn't create enough.

After a disappointing defeat at Gresty Road, the Alex boss told the club's official web-site: "It is the manner of the defeat that hurts because we didn't do as well as we have been doing at home. They turned it into a real battle, hitting long balls and looking for the knockdowns. We slipped into that way of playing as well, sometimes we have to do that because of the pitch but we strayed from the game plan today, because I wanted them to get the ball down and play and we didn't do that enough.

Steve Davis could not hide his frustration after his Crewe Alexandra side went down to only their second home defeat since October. Oldham substitute Conor Wilkinson scored the only goal of the match in the 74th minute to see Crewe sip back into the bottom four.
