Pogs Could Have Central Role

2 July 2014

Steve Davis says Pogba will get chance to prove he can be central striker

Mathias Pogba could get the chance to prove that his best position rests through the middle rather as a wide man. Pogba, who unfortunately missed the first half of last season after sustaining a knee injury against Manchester United in pre-season will be hoping to replicate his first year with the club when he finished as leading scorer with 16 goals.

With Byron Moore, AJ Leitch-Smith moving on this summer and Max Clayton currently exploring over options, Crewe are light on forwards and Mathias Pogba could emerge as the main man for boss Steve Davis.

Davis is in the market for another goal scorer this summer, but he will also give Pogba and Vadaine Oliver ample opportunity to stake their claim.

Steve told crewealex.net: “Mathias scored most of his goals from a wide position than as a central forward but it could be that he will get a chance to play up there. We will see how both he and Vadaine (Oliver) do in pre-season.

“I don’t think he has played well or been as threatening when he has played centrally but that is not to say he cannot do it. His ball intention will have to improve but he could have that physical presence I think you need. I think you a big, powerful one up there to get on the ball.

“Vadaine has come back in better physical shape. He has had a slight set-back with his ankle, but he will be fine. We are looking for Vadaine to do better in his second season. He had to make a big step up from Lincoln.

He added: “It will depend on how we play if both of them were to start.”
