Steve says team failed to deliever in front of travelling fans

Steve Davis, the Crewe Alexandra manager says the travelling Alex supporters deserved a better performance than they got from their team on Saturday. A slow start at Fratton Park saw the Railwaymen 2-0 down before the 20 minute mark and made it a mountain to climb in the second period. Although, the Alex did rally in the second half and conjured up some chances, the damage had already been down in the opening of the match and Davis admitted that his team never hit the heights of Tuesday’s display at Shrewsbury.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We have had a lot of game of late, so it was fantastic to see so many supporters at Portsmouth. It was a long trip and they gave the players tremendous backing throughout the game.

“We took over 300 to Shrewsbury on Tuesday night and it was a similar number at Portsmouth. We didn’t give them enough to cheer about and the players know they have to do better, especially in the first half.

The boss added: “After what has happened over the last year, the supporters expect better and demand better. We didn’t deliver at Portsmouth and it has been a learning curve for a lot of them because this is a tough league.”
