Steve davis says Ellington still to prove his fitness

Steve Davis has told crewealex.net that trialist Nathan Ellington will have to remain patient if he is to secure a contract at the club. Ellington is in action for the club’s Under-21s today against one of his former clubs Wigan Athletic as the 31-year-old continue to work on his fitness.

Davis was impressed with Ellington’s application to training and his obvious ability to finish off chances, but after missing the majority of the season, the former Bristol Rovers and Watford man is playing catch-up his overall fitness.

Steve says: “The only concern we have with Nathan is his fitness levels. He hasn’t played at all this season and needs games. I spoke with him on Friday about the situation and he knows we cannot rush into anything. There has been no commitment from us but Nathan continues to come in and train and play for our Under-21s because he is enjoying it.

“He has settled in with the players and likes the way we play. He told me he hasn’t been at many clubs who play this way and he likes the environment we train in. I think he is happy here and he knows he has got to remain patient.

“It will have to the right decision for the club and Nathan knows that. He is a great finisher. He shows that in training all the time. He is very calm and knows where the net is.

Steve added: “It is just a question of him being able to last games and having that same energy and movement like he has had in his career.”
