Luke Murphy says he would like the job full-time

Luke Murphy has told of his honour in leading out his local team at the age of just 22. Murphy was handed the captain’s armband by manager Steve Davis after Ashley Westwood’s late move to Aston Villa on deadline day. Murphy led by example against Coventry and says it was a really good experience to lead the team out at Gresty Road.

The Alex midfielder told Crewe Alex Player that we would welcome the position on a permanent basis if Davis is reluctant to give it to a player who has only just joined the club. Steve Phillips and Adam Dugdale would also be contenders, but the time being Luke Murphy has the honour.

Luke told us: “It was a really good experience to be captain of the club. I am a local lad, so for me to lead my team out at 22 was a real honour. For the manager to pick me, was a boost and it is nice for him to put that responsibility on my shoulders. It is something I want to do and I enjoyed it.

“Hopefully I can carry on. I'd love to do it, but the decision is down to the manager. I’d like to lead by example with my football, but also I've played quite a lot of games so it came naturally to rally the troops or to give constructive criticism.

Luke added: “As a team we have six points more than we had this time last season, and we are in a higher league, so we are on the right track. We have to continue that progress.
