Gaffer happier with the tempo to our game in FA Cup tie

Steve Davis admits he couldn’t criticise his players’ effort away at Wycombe during our FA Cup first round tie, but says that his players have to try and perform on a consistent basis. The Alex boss was pleased to have taken our tie to a replay, although we did create enough chances on the day to have perhaps progressed at the first attempt.

November in that replay, with the winners set to play host to Preston North End in round two at the beginning of December.thCrewe now host Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday 19

Steve told us: “There was certainly more energy and zest to our performance at Wycombe and it was more like I expect with the way we defended and the chances we created.

“We should have scored more than the one goal we did and one or two did tire towards the end and that is why I tried to shore things up a bit in the middle of the pitch.

“Young George Evans wouldn’t have experienced the intensity of having two games like that and it caught up with him in the second half but he is a young lad and he will get used to that. He will adjust.

He added: “Fitness shouldn’t be a concern to any of them now. We are a quarter into the season and they should all be fit and where they need to be. They do work with Andy (Franks) to maintain those levels and that gives us the chance to work on their technique and shape. They should all be fit enough now.”
