Max Wins Football League Award

21 September 2012

Clayton named young player of the month for August

Crewe Alexandra’s Max Clayton has been named as the Football League’s Young Player of the Month Award for August. The teenager has been in fine form in the early part of the season, scoring twice against Hartlepool in the League Cup and scoring the winner against Coventry City. His form also saw him included in the England Under-19 side that travelled to Hamburg to face Germany.

Clayton, 18, has really broken into the first team scene this season and follows in the footsteps of former Crewe youngster Nick Powell, who won the same award last December following his consistent performances.

After being presented with the Football League award by manager Steve Davis, Max told crewealex.net: “It is a great honour to receive the award. I don’t have that many at home. I think the last one I won was one of Dario’s for trickster of the week when I was about nine years old!

“I have been pleased with my form so far this season. I have played reasonably well but I know I need to be scoring more goals, because that is what my game is about.

“I know Nick (Powell) won the award last season and I was pleased for him then. He has been an inspiration because we came through the Academy together and has shown what can be done. Watching him run out at Old Trafford was a great feeling.

Max added: “I am pleased to win this award. It is a good feeling because it just shows that the hard work pays off.”

There will be an exclusive interview with Max later on today on Crewe Alex Player, so why not subscribe today.
