Late Decision On Number One

29 July 2014

Boss says it could go right to wire in the battle between Garratt and Shearer

Steve Davis has admitted to the club’s official web-site that he will have a difficult decision to make when it comes to naming his number one on the opening day of the season. The Alex boss has been impressed with both of his senior goalkeepers throughout the pre-season and says that he will leave his decision until the final week of the build-up.

The Crewe manager has elected to alternate his two goalkeepers for the pre-season games with Ben Garratt set to start at Southport this evening. Scott Shearer played 90 minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I have been impressed with both goalkeepers throughout the pre-season and a decision on the number one is something I will decide in the final week leading up to the first game.

“Both have shown that they are competent goalkeepers and there hasn’t been too much between them. Of course Scott would have been a little disappointed with Wolves’ late goal on Saturday but generally he has been good.

Steve added: “Ben will play tonight and I will continue to assess them in training before the 9th and Fleetwood."

"It may be that at the start of the season that one will play at Fleetwood and the next one in the cup game at Barnsley, just so that they both get a game early on in the season.”
