Keeping A Level Head

Steve Davis says it is important to remain positive in challenging times

Steve Davis says the club’s current position in League One is making his fourth season in the professional game a real challenge, but it is one he remains determined to turn it around.

The Alex boss turned things around last season, surviving on the final day with a win over Preston North End. The Crewe Alexandra boss admits that it is important to keep a level head when things are going not as well as you would like as much as when things are going according to plan.

Ahead of this weekend’s home game with Coventry, Steve told crewealex.net: “I don’t tend to get too low when we lose or too high when things are going well. I think I keep it a level. It is important to do that.

“As a manager and staff we try and create a positive vibe when we come into work. I am not emotionless and when we have lost on a Saturday, I’ve not had a good weekend, but you have to get over it quickly and get back to work on Monday.

“It is a challenge and that is the way you have to approach it. It was a challenge to get promotion from League Two and win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and now it is a challenge to turn this around. You have to work hard either way and that is what we are all doing.

“Dario (Gradi) has been good. He has been there before, both good and bad. He has been around a place that is buzzing because things are going well and at this club when it hasn’t and we have been relegated.

“He offers bits of advice and experience and encourages me to understand that this is part of management and the challenges you face.

“Managers who have been in this type of situation understand each other. You have to keep believing in yourself and your ability. All managers are under pressure under different circumstances and you have to keep fighting.”
