International Call-Ups Haven't Helped

17 November 2015

Boss says disruption in team selection has not helped consistency this season.

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says that recent International call-ups for Marcus Haber, Harry Wilson and Callum Saunders and untimely injuries have hampered his options when it comes to selection. With Haber away on International duty with Canada last week, the club’s main target man missed the weekend trip to Bradford City. His obvious replacement in a 4-4-2 formation, Lauri Dalla Valle was then ruled out in the week with a neck injury which prompted a change of formation again to 4-3-3 with two wide men supporting Saunders.

The Crewe Alexandra boss had just started to partner Haber with Saunders and it paid dividends when we won our first home game of the season against Sheffield United, but it was disrupted again for the trip to Bradford at the weekend.

Steve told crewealex.net: “The International call-ups and the injuries we have had at different times this season does not help you have a settled team. It can affect the consistency of things but there is nothing you can do about it.

“It is unfortunate but we will probably see Marcus again on Friday morning. We have lost him a few times this season and we don’t have another one like him in the club. We had to do things differently again at Bradford.

“We haven’t had young Harry Wilson for two weeks. He wasn’t given permission by Liverpool to play in the FA Cup and was called back to play in their Under-21s. He has since been away with Wales and now Callum (Saunders) has been called up, so we have to prepare for most of the week without him as well.

“It would be nice to have them all fit and available but it has been a bit stop/start for most of the season for one reason or another.”
