Gaffer: “We Just Can’t Get That Home Result”

Boss frustrated by home Southend defeat

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis bemoaned his side’s Gresty Road fortunes after Southend took all three points from South Cheshire.

The Alex are now winless in six home games in all competitions in their own back yard and Davis admits that there the form has not been good enough.

Joe Pigott netted twice early in the second half to seal the 2-1 victory for the visitors, with Brad Inman slotting home in between to draw the Alex level as the home nightmare continued.

Talking to the post match press, Davis said: ”Unfortunately we’ve had this problem at home with not being able to keep the ball out of our net.

“I thought they were better than us. They were more streetwise and used their experience very well against us and did the things that experienced players do that the youngster haven’t learned yet – sometimes that gets you through some games.

“The difference was they started both halves very well. The more we talk about it the worse we get and we talked about setting our stall out and palying on the front foot and we didn’t do it for either half – that was disappointing.

“I went with the extra forward and got rid of one of the midfield players to try and get a bit more going forward. We struggled to defend without the extra midfielder and our forward play was ok at times without being really dangerous.

“We just can’t get that home result. I don’t know whether it’s something mental, but they’re finding it really tough here.

“Brad took his goal fantastically well but we just couldn’t hurt them enough. Things didn’t drop for us tonight, but no excuses – they were better than us tonight.”
