Davis: "Just Missed That Quality"

Boss says Crewe lacked cutting edge at Tranmere

After seeing his side take the lead at Tranmere but end up losing 2-1 Steve Davis told the club's official web-site: "I didn't think we played well enough to win the game but were perhaps unfortunate to lose it. I didn't think there was much in it in the first half. It was a game of few chances and we took the lead through Brad after what was our first real attack. He finished emphatically.

"We were defending well and I don't recall Steve having to make too many saves either in the first half. I didn't think they were going to break through and I thought we were comfortable. The shape was good and we were keeping the ball but we weren't holding the ball up well enough or creating chances ourselves.

"I wanted the players to take what we had achieved into the second half and be on the front foot but we didn't start the second half well and Tranmere were much better. They stepped it up. They got the ball out to Robinson and he weaved away to produce a cross to the far post but we didn't defend the far post well enough. Gregor has to be better there.

"They then hit the post and we were caught out at the corner which led to their second goal. We didn't pick Max Power up at the far post and then we didn't put enough pressure on him. It was still a great strike from him.

"Lauri has hit one into the side netting when I thought he should have squared it and I thought Max should have got his head onto one of the crosses going in. I thought he was going to head it in. We played okay, but we needed more from our forward players today. They were not proactive enough and we can do better than we did today."
