Davis May Opt For Younger Goalkeeper

1 July 2015

Davis to keep his options open over who will challenge Ben Garratt for number one spot.

Steve Davis has revealed that he may look to sign a young goalkeeper to get the best out of his current number one Ben Garratt. The Alex boss may approach his goalkeeping situation differently and may look to entice a potential successor to the highly-rated Garratt to the Football Club.

The experienced Paul Rachubka could be another option but with Steve Davis keen to bring back Fred Barber as his goalkeeping coach, Rachubka may elect to look elsewhere with his own personal interest in goalkeeping coaching.

Both Garratt and Rachubka are currently receiving coaching at Barber’s summer school at Staffordshire University, but Davis has stressed that it is not a foregone conclusion that the trio will reunite with us this pre-season.

Steve explained to the club’s official web-site: “Paul is currently working with Fred at his goalkeeping course in Staffordshire and I’ve had a conversation with him about his future. He is interested in the goalkeeping coaching side of things and he is an intelligent guy and knows where he wants to advance his career after he finishes.

“If that fits into what I want to do remains to be seen. I’m not sure if that is the route I want to take again and that may prompt me to take a different route.

“I haven’t ruled it out either way. Another option would be to bring in a younger goalkeeper, who is keen to come here and push Ben and also get his own game time. There are a few young goalkeepers out there and it is something we will consider.

He added: “Hopefully they will come here and improve and in time look to replace Ben as our number one.”
