Max Clayton is to go on trial after his Crewe contract expires

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has admitted that the club maybe losing the battle to keep Max Clayton at the club. Crewe have been keen to keep the talented 19-year-old forward but he has rejected the offer of a new contract and is currently training with another club in the hope of securing a move there.

he is not out of contract and has the freedom to look elsewhere. stClayton has spent the majority of the closed season training with us at Reaseheath, but as of July 1

Davis is planning his squad without Clayton and will step up his search for a new loan striker this week.

Steve told crewealex.net: “The Max thing is on-going and I’m continuously asked questions about it. All I can tell our supporters is that he is currently training with another club. They have spoken to us and as he is out-of-contract, he can go where he likes. He is within his rights to do that.

They must be keen on him to have a look at him and if he impresses I am sure they will come back with an offer. “It will be a type of trial and they will make a decision on him after that.

“We are due compensation and hopefully something can be decided between the clubs if it comes to that. It is something the chairman and Dario and myself will decide upon in due course.

“Whatever happens with Max, we wish him well.”
