Boss admits he remains in the dark over Max Clayton's next move

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis admits he remains unsure of Max Clayton’s next move after his recent trial with Championship new boys Wolverhampton Wanderers came to nothing. The former England Youth International also spent a period of pre-season on trial at Premier League side Sunderland.

Most recent speculation has the talented 20-year-old linked with a possible trial arrangement with our North West neighbours Everton, but Davis has explained to our supporters that he remains very much in the dark over the striker’s next move.

Steve Davis has stressed though that he would always consider welcoming back the local lad if a club is not willing to sign him. Despite Clayton being out of contract, due to his age, Crewe would be due a transfer fee as form of compensation.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I am not really sure what Max and his advisor have planned. We haven’t had a conversation with his agent. I have had a conversation with Max and he is looking for somewhere else. Crewe doesn’t appear to be on his radar.

“We would welcome him back but that is entirely his decision. We could only ask and I can assure the fans that the club has done everything we can to try and keep him here. That has been the case ever since he rejected our first contract offer last year.

“I don’t know where he will go. All we can do is wait and see.”
