Steve delighted to add Chris Atkinson to his options
Steve Davis says his new signing Chris Atkinson will need a bit of time to catch-up on his match fitness. The 22-year-old signed a two-year on Tuesday following his release from Huddersfield in the summer and he appeared for Crewe in our 1-0 defeat to Macclesfield.
Atkinson showed some glimpses of his skill, vision and attacking prowess, especially in the first half before tiredness understandably settled in. He was later replaced by young Callum Saunders.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Chris did okay but he looked tired in the second half. That was understandable because he has missed a large chunk of the pre-season and had a long day.
“He came over in the afternoon to get his contract signed and that involves a lot of hanging about and it is not ideal preparation to play.
“He is naturally fit but he will get fitter. He is an attack minded midfielder who enjoys to get forward and support the forwards. He is also a free kick taker and has a good engine on him.
The boss added: “He will get about the pitch and as he is only 22, he has a lot a potential. There is certainly scope there to work with him and he is keen to learn. I know that is why he has chosen to come here and we are delighted to have him in the squad.”
