Boss On Swindon's New Threat

4 September 2015

Steve Davis on our former man Nicky Ajose and on lona Blues striker Wes Thomas

Steve Davis says his back line will have to be wary of Swindon Town’s new-look strike force if their deadline day signings Wes Thomas and Nicky Ajose mark their debuts at Gresty Road tomorrow.

Thomas has signed on loan Birmingham City until January, while our former loanee Ajose has signed a three-year-deal to return to the Wiltshire club on a permanent deal. Ajose left Leeds by mutual consent ahead of deadline day to become a free agent.

Ajose played a key role in seeing Crewe survive relegation last season, scoring 9 goals during a successful loan spell. Although he struggled to sustain his prolific goalscoring rate during the second part of his loan, his early vital goals saw us pick up valuable points.

Ahead of our meeting with the Robins this weekend, Steve told us: “Swindon have lost a big player with (Nathan) Byrne signing for Wolves on deadline day but Mark (Cooper) has brought in two good strikers in Wes Thomas and Nicky (Ajose).

“Nicky is someone we know well and if they start then we know they will pose a threat with their movement.

“Nicky did very well for us last season and he played a big part in seeing us stay up. It could be argued that his goals got us the points we needed to remain in League One.

The boss added: “We are aware of what he offers and he will be determined to do well for his new club. He had success there in the past and he will be looking to do the same again this time around now he is there on a permanent basis.”
