Boss On Cooper's Excellent First Year

24 April 2015

Steve Davis delighted with George's progression

Steve Davis has praised George Cooper’s maturity during what the boss has described 'as an excellent first season as a young professional'. The Warrington based youngster announced himself on the first team scene with a stunning free-kick to win the game against Coventry City back in October and his eventful first season has gone from strength-to-strength.

Cooper has made 27 first team appearances, scoring three goals but he has also helped the club’s successful Youth Team reach the quarter-final stage of the Youth Cup, defeating Arsenal away in the process.

Cooper’s fantastic season culminated in him winning the Apprentice of the Year Award at the Football League awards last Sunday evening. An honour Nick Powell won back in 2012 ahead of his move to Manchester United.

Cooper, 18, is hoping to be involved in the squad at Coventry tomorrow and Davis is pleased with the progress the talented forward has made.

Steve told crewealex.net: “George has had an excellent first year, as a second year scholar, first year pro with us. He is still a young player learning the game and he knows he has some way to go yet but he is eager to learn and improve.

“He has shown great maturity and takes his confidence onto the pitch. He is an undoubted talent and it is a great honour to have another of our young apprentices win the Football League award. Nick won it in 2012 and to have two winners in three years is great for the Football Club.

He added: “He has also had to juggle his studies at the same time and that is never easy as well, so he has done really well.”
