Boss Happy With Centre-Half Options

4 August 2015

Steve Davis delighted to have added towering Nugent to his defensive options.

Steve Davis was pleased to add the towering centre-half Ben Nugent to his squad yesterday. The 22-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal with the club and will certainly add competition and cover to the centre of the Crewe back line. Davis was eager to add another defender to contest for a place alongside Harry Davis, Jon Guthrie and George Ray.

The Crewe Alexandra boss was keen to add some extra height to his back line and Nugent, who spent time on loan at Yeovil Town last season certainly offers that in abundance, as well as being left sided.

On completing his latest signing, Steve told crewealex.net: “Ben is a big lad and we knew that from knowing about him and from watching him. He is a player we have kept an eye on for some time and when I was given permission to speak to him, he was very keen to come here.

“It has taken a bit of time to be finalised but I am delighted to have him. The hard work has paid off. He is really keen to come here and play games. He is at the stage of his career where he wants to play.

“He is hungry and keen to improve and those of the sort of players we love to get our teeth into and help realise their potential. He has played in the Championship and made his breakthrough at Cardiff at a fairly young age. He has also gone out on loan to a few clubs, so he knows what to expect at this level.

He added: “If he develops like we think we will then he will become a real asset to the club. He will add height and is an old fashioned type who loves those aerial battles. We have four good centre-halves now and the competition is good.”
