Ball Possession Into Chances

2 September 2015

Steve Davis wants to improve on creativity after failling to hit the target at Wigan.

Steve Davis says he was pleased with the way his Crewe Alexandra side dominated large proportions of possession against Wigan Athletic but he is looking for more creativity in the final third. Crewe had the lion’s share of the ball at the DW Stadium but couldn’t find a way past a stubborn Wigan defence as we slipped to a 1-0 defeat thanks to a controversial goal at a corner. Defender George Ray was pushed by the goalscorer Michael Jabobs before he headed home at the far post for the only goal of the game.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We did have a lot of the ball at Wigan and the stats back that up. We had 60% of the possession and at periods in the game it was more than that.

“I was pleased with our ball retention on Saturday and we dominated for large periods, especially in the second half but we found it difficult to get through. We worked hard to get through but we didn’t have too many opportunities. Their goalkeeper wasn’t worked hard enough.

He added: “We can be better in the final third but I cannot ask too much more of the players because they are doing all we can ask of them. We haven’t have much luck either but once we can get those first three points, I’m sure we will kick on and the confidence can build. “
