Boss disappointed to miss out of James Bailey

Steve Davis says he is disappointed to miss out of summer transfer target James Bailey, but he admits he half expected it after trying to entice the former Derby County midfielder back to his former club.

Bailey is currently training with another League One club and is expected to join them. Davis made his interest known this summer, hoping that the anchor man midfielder would consider resurrecting his career back at Crewe after only featuring in two games for the Rams last season.

The Crewe boss says that going in for Bailey was ‘setting our sights high’.

“He is a player and a lad we have a high regard for and we knew he could improve us. “We wanted to offer James a chance to come and play, because he has struggled to do that over the last 12 months or so, ‘says Steve.

“We have set our sights high for that reason. We only want players, who will improve us and that is why it has been quieter than usual with our incomings. I spoke to James directly and his agent. I knew there was other interest and once I knew that this other club was interested then I knew we would struggle to compete financially.

He added: “All we can do is sit tight and keep working behind the scenes to bring in the players we need.”
