Steve Davis on Murphy update

Steve Davis remains hopeful that his influential captain Luke Murphy may still remain at the club this summer. Murphy enjoyed his best season in a Crewe shirt after inheriting the armband from the departing Ash Westwood last August and his return of 9 goals and double a number of assists has seen him linked with a move away from the Alexandra Stadium.

Murphy, 23, inspired Crewe Alexandra to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, opening the scoring with a wonderfully taken goal in the Wembley Final and his form saw him named by his peers in the League One team of the Year at the PFA Awards Dinner in London.

Davis still expects some interest in his skipper to materialise, but the Crewe Alexandra boss is still surprised that the market has been as quiet as it has.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It is still quiet and I would imagine that a lot of clubs are doing a lot of work behind the scenes.

“Neil (Baker) and myself have worked throughout May trying to put things in place, talking to players, agents and clubs to see if we can bring in the players we need. It does take time.

“I have been surprised that no-one has contacted me yet in regards to Murph. That has been surprisingly quiet as well, but I would imagine clubs are in the same boat as us and they are keeping their options open.

“Murph has been in during the summer, working hard and we’ll just have to wait and see what his future holds. If that is here with us then that’s great from our perspective.”
