Crewe Alex’s search for the points they need to ensure League Two safety will go on after their set-piece nightmare came back to haunt them at Yeovil Town on Easter Monday.

The Railwaymen, who have struggled to defend from dead ball situations all season, trailed 2-0 at the break after a direct free-kick from Matt Dolan and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro’s free header from a wide dead ball proved their undoing in the first half.

And Otis Khan’s goal after the restart, in a move which originated from a corner, killed the game as a contest.

Crewe huffed and puffed, and manager David Artell made all his subs early, but they did very little in an attacking sense and they are now four games without a win.

They dropped a place to 19th and, with three games to play, they are seven point clear of the drop zone.

With rock bottom Leyton Orient up next at Gresty Road on Saturday, the Alex will be keen to add to their 49 points and get over the safety line.

Yeovil Town took a huge step towards securing their Sky Bet League Two status as they eased to a crucial 3-0 win over Crewe Alexandra.

Matty Dolan's free-kick - almost a carbon copy of his winning goal in the reverse fixture in October - celebrated his 100th Glovers appearance by opening the scoring on the half hour mark, before Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time with his first Yeovil goal.

Otis Khan added a third with 20 minutes remaining when he headed home to secure a vital victory.

With Hartlepool and Newport both losing, Yeovil now sit seven points above the drop zone with three games to play.
