"We Have To Keep The Squad Mentally Focussed"

25 August 2016

Steve Davis says he will continue to utilise his squad to get them through hectic schedule.

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that he will continue to utilise his squad as much as he can to make sure they remain fresh and strong to continue picking up results. The Alex travel to Cheltenham Town this weekend on the back of an unbeaten mini-run in League Two and a morale boosting performance against Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Cup. Crewe were narrowly beaten 4-3 after extra-time at Ewood Park on Tuesday evening.

The Crewe boss rested Ryan Lowe and chose new signing Danny Hollands ahead of James Jones for the League Cup tie at Blackburn and he admits that he will continue to shuffle his pack as we try to cope with a hectic fixture schedule.

Steve told crewealex.net: “With the U-23 games as well, we have had a really hectic schedule and it has been a question of playing and then resting. Once this two-week period is over, we will be able to get back out on the training ground and do some work.

“We have to make sure the players are mentally focussed and as fresh as they can be. We have created an environment of honesty, so if one player has a knock or isn’t 100% then we can utilise the squad and potentially rest them.

“Of course, you can ask a player how he is and he will turn around and say he is fine and everyone wants to play when the team is playing well and winning games. They are enjoying it.

Steve added: “If then comes down to my decision and I have to take them out and explain that to them. We just have to make sure they are strong enough for the next game and keep them as strong as we can.”
