U23: Crewe 2-1 Nottingham Forest

6 March 2017

Perry Ng wins it in injury time for Alex Morris' side

Crewe Alexandra Under 23's came from behind to record an impressive 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest at Reaseheath thanks to Perry Ng's stoppage time cracker.

Aaron Smith put Forest ahead on the stroke of half-time, but Alex trialist Sam Heathcote headed in an equaliser from close range in the second period before Ng's late strike.

Nottingham Forest were on the front foot in the early stages but it was Crewe who almost took the lead on nine minute after a long ball set fit-again striker Callum Saunders away one-on-one - he neatly dinked his shot over the keeper, but it hit the inside of the post & agonizingly ran across the goal-line.

In an opening half an hour of mis-fortune, Forest hit the post themselves on 23 minutes, Yassine Eneyah whacking one off the upright from 25-yards with a well hit effort.

That wasn't the end of the woodwork's afternoon though, as on the half-hour mark Callum Ainley hit the inside of the post again for Crewe, working the space well for himself & striding into the box before seeing his precise shot come back off the inside of the frame.

It was a tight affair first half, but Forest took to the front a minute before the break, winger Smith stealing in at the back-post to convert a low cross first time past Dave Richards.

Crewe took the reigns early in the second period, Heathcote seizing on an error by Forest keeper Jordan Wright on 55 minutes to head into the net from close range after he couldn't catch a corner-kick.

With the game locked at 1-1, both sides pushed for a winner, & it almost came for Crewe on 89 minutes, Oli Finney slicing a shot wide from close range after good work by Owen Dale.

But Crewe weren't to be denied, Ng popping up on 22-yards from right-back in the 91st minute to rifle an unstoppable drive into the far corner to secure all three points for Morris' side in the race for a play-off spot in the U23 Professional Development League Two.

Crewe: Richards, Wilkinson (Poscha), Heathcote, Ng, Pickering, Finney, Ainley, Dale, Kirk (Reilly), Udoh, Saunders (Lundstram)
