Steve Reflects On Morecambe Stalemate

2 January 2017

Boss pleased with defensive clean sheet

Steve Davis felt his Crewe Alexandra side didn’t have the rub of the green at the Globe Arena as his side were denied three points by an outstanding save from the Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche to deny James Jones.

The Alex boss was pleased with the way his side defended in obtaining a deserved clean-sheet against Jim Bentley’s side.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I thought we were fine throughout the game today. I thought we were the better side in the first half. It was more even in the second half and they began by applying pressure but I thought that aside from one or two moments we defended well today. We looked solid and it was nice to get that clean-sheet.

“We just lacked that quality in front of goal. I think both sides did today. Some of them haven’t scored for a while now so they are getting a bit anxious in front of goal. Dagnall hasn’t scored for a while so he is a bit anxious there, but we cannot fault his work ethic. They just need to be more patient and show some composure but I have faith in our front four, and Lowey when he is back, to score goals.

“Saying that their goalkeeper has made a terrific save to tip the one over from Jonah. It was a fantastic save, so we had our moments to win the game. Charlie got in early on and was denied and we also missed a couple as well.

“Morecambe had their chances too from corners and free-kicks but we defended well and it was a decent point for us.”

The boss also hinted at bringing in some new faces if possible during the January window.

He said: “We would like to bring in one or two if we can. It will depend on what we can do with our own and the money we have available but a different type of forward would help us. I think that we would benefit from freshening it up with some new faces. It could do with an injection and we have a meeting planned to discuss those targets.

“If there is an opportunity to do something then we will.”
