Steve: "We Were A Whisker Away From Another Upset"

23 August 2016

Steve Davis gives us his post match reaction from Ewood Park following EFL Cup exit

He added: "I don't think we can play much better than that and not win the game. The players have set high standards from the beginning of the season and we have to keep that going. The challenge is to sustain that level of performance."

"I cannot ask for any more from the players tonight. Their effort, their work rate and the way they played and the patterns of play we were creating. We showed some great combinations of play and were getting through the lines and that is how I want the team to play and I'm sure the fans want that as well.

"I was proud of them because we didn't know when we are beaten, kept going and took it into extra-time with a terrific goal from Daggers, who I was delighted with with his two goals. Man for man we have competed well with a Championship side and came very close to causing an upset.

"At 2-1 you sense that with the quality that they have it is hard to sustain that level from the first minute to the last minute and they would have chances. You just hope that things go for you, that they drop for you but they didn't quite tonight.

"There were a couple of things we were disappointed with, a couple of goals from the set plays and Ben made an error for the second. At 2-1 though we had a couple of chances to go to 3-1 with Coops hitting the post and Callum had a great chance but the keeper has guessed right to make a pin-point save. It could have been very different at that point.

Steve told the club's official web-site: "The one disappointment from our point of view is that we didn't quite come here and cause an upset. We were a whisker away from doing that with our play tonight.

Steve Davis was proud of his players after they took Championship side Blackburn Rovers right to the wire in the EFL Cup. Crewe eventually lost 4-3 in extra-time with Shane Duffy heading home the winner in the 96th minute. Crewe let 2-0 before Blackburn fought back to lead in the 88th minute only for Chris Dagnall to pop up with a well deserved equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time.
