Guthrie Not Affected By Own Goal

27 September 2016

Steve Davis says defender showed great confidence to get over own goal quickly.

Steve Davis says that Jon Guthrie showed great character to not allow his own-goal to affect his overall performance against Blackpool. The Alex boss says that the centre-half has been one of Crewe’s most consistent performers this season and says he showed his growing experience by coping with the early set-back against the Seasiders.

Guthrie was unfortunate to divert a header past his own goalkeeper following a cross from full-back Andy Taylor in only the 10th minute of Saturday’s 1-1 draw.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Jon was unfortunate to score an own goal but he was good and didn’t let it affect his game. He picked himself up and got on with it.

"We play with a high line, so sometimes you are going to be facing your own goal and Jon just got too much on it instead of glancing it. It happens as a defender from time to time and you just have to get on with it, like he did.

“He has been playing well for us and playing with a lot of confidence. That won’t affect him and I was pleased with him, as I was with the back four. I think they looked really solid. They didn’t do anything spectacular but Blackpool didn’t get behind us.

“I am sure they will look to take that into the Wycombe game.”
