Steve Davis says England needed that quality individual to unlock tight defences.

Steve Davis believes that England desperately needed a top drawer match winner during the European Championships. England crashed out of the tournament in the round of 16 to the smallest nation ever to qualify for the Euros and Davis says that the three lions just lack that extra quality to win tight games.

England drew with Russia and Slovakia in the Group stages and only beat neighbours Wales with an injury time goal from Daniel Sturridge.

Steve, who has viewed a number of the games, said: “I thought England did reasonably well in the group games but we just lacked that real match winner that the other nations seem to have. There are some outstanding individuals who can be the difference in tight games because most of the countries are organised defensively.

“The big nations are good teams but they also have individuals who can do something out of ordinary. It looked as though England had some promising young players, who could do that but they didn’t produce, especially in the Iceland game.

“You sometimes need an individual to produce something to win you the game or you have to be like Italy, who always seem to find a way to win.

He added: “Young Rashford did add some life in the closing stages against Iceland and maybe he would have produced something to have got England back into the game if he had been introduced earlier.”
