Davis May Select Some Fringe Players

Alex boss Steve Davis says he will make changes for EFL Trophy tie at Accrington

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says he may use our EFL Trophy game at Accrington Stanley to give his fringe players some game time. The Alex boss has to pick a strong side in relation to the starting line-up that began at Cheltenham on Saturday but he is allowed to make up to five changes and he may look to utilise that rule to give some of this players a chance to work on their match sharpness.

Crewe start their EFL Trophy campaign at Accrington Stanley on Tuesday evening with home games against Wolves U-23s and Chesterfield still to come in a new regionalise group format.

Ahead of our mid-week clash at the Crown Ground, Steve said: “The rule about naming a strong team still exists but you can make some changes to the team that started at the weekend and I may look to do that. I may look to utilise the squad and give some of the fringe players some game time.

“You have to select six from the previous game or if you have injures then the players who have played the most so far. I am never in favour of the restriction on who a manager can pick but it has never been an issue for us.

“It is a competition we have always respected and we have always wanted to do as well as we can in it. We have won it not that long ago and it was great to do that. We always take it seriously and always approach our games in the same professional manner. I don’t think anyone could ever say that we have disrespected the competition or looked to take the mickey with the teams we have selected.”
