"Cheltenham Is A Really Good Club"

26 August 2016

Steve praises our previous play-off rivals ahead of League meeting.

Crewe Alexandra face Cheltenham Town for the first time since the 2012 League Two Play-Off Final and although Steve Davis possesses fond memories of that day at Wembley Stadium he says that it has no relevance on our trip to Whaddon Road.

Crewe defeated Cheltenham 2-0 at Wembley thanks to goals from Nick Powell and Byron Moore but defender Harry Davis remains the only survivor of our winning side.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I’m sure everyone will remember that day at Wembley. It is something that we will never forget but it is a different time and a very different group of players.

“Cheltenham are a good club and it’s been a few years since we last went there, so it will be nice to go back.

“Cheltenham slipped out of the Football League, but Gary Johnson got them back up at the first attempt. They have some decent players and they will be aiming to make their mark in this division, like we are.

He added: “I am not sure if Gary will change his team after they played in mid-week and we have watched them this season. They are a good side with good players, but we are in good form and will be looking forward to it. It is another challenge away from home, but if we can go there and play like we did at Blackburn then we are more than capable of picking up a positive result. “
