Boss Open Minded To Format Change

29 August 2016

Steve Davis says he will give EFL Trophy a chance in new group format.

Steve Davis says it will be interesting to see how the new format for the Football League Trophy works out this season. Crewe start their EFL Checkatrade Trophy campaign with their first group game against Accrington Stanley tomorrow night and although the Alex boss is unhappy that Crewe have definitely three more fixtures to squeeze in with future games against Wolverhampton Wanderers U-23s and Chesterfield, he is intrigued to see how it works.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It will be interesting to see how it works with the group stage. It is regionalised now and we now incorporate the Under-23s team, so it will be interesting to see what happens with it. The prize money has increased and that is only good for the clubs and the competition but we have three more games in a mini-league.

“I am open minded about it at the moment and we’ll have to see how clubs receive it going forward because it is only a year’s trial at this stage.

“The incentive is there for the clubs but there is always a lot of games at the start of the season and having three more is unhelpful but something we have to get on with. “
