Artell: "Only Pick Youngsters For Right Reasons"

27 April 2017

Boss says it is important he gets the balance right in the last two games.

David Artell says he will only play his young players for the ‘right reasons’ with two games to go. The Crewe Alexandra manager handed youngster Harry Pickering his senior debut as a substitute against Leyton Orient and the likes of Oli Finney, Owen Dale, Callum Saunders and Dan Udoh will be hoping for a chance to impress in the final couple of games.

Artell wants to end the season as strongly as possible, especially with Plymouth Argyle competing for the League Two title. The boss says he is mindful of his young players’ development.

Artell told the club’s official web-site: “I am mindful of the development of our younger players and I will only select players for the right reasons. It won’t be beneficial for them to be thrown into a physical battle at this stage. That may be more harmful than good.

“It is a question of getting the balance right and I will look at it and consider it over the last two games. It may be that someone gets a chance.

“We will discuss things like we always do. The staff will put their feelings forward and then I will decide if one of the younger ones will get some game time.”
