Artell: "It's A Massive Opportunity Missed"

Manager angry with second half collapse to Exiles

Crewe Alexandra Manager Dave Artell was angry with his team after they threw away a 1-0 half-time lead to lose to League Two's bottom Club Newport County.

Callum Cooke put The Alex ahead in a first half that they bossed, but Newport emerged a different outfit from the side that trudged into the dressing room at half-time & rattled Crewe early in the second half to equalise.

Artell was furious that his side failed to get to grips with the visitors throughout the entire second period & that was confounded by Joss Ladabie's winner with two minutes left on the clock.

"You're not wrong, of course I'm unhappy," said Artell.

"We were outfought, out-battled, we gave them the initiative - everything that I don't want my football team to be.

"As physical & uncompromising as we were first half, second half it wasn't there & that can't happen.

"The mindset changes. I just told them, it was two different teams. They are bottom of the league & we made them look like Brazil.

"We didn't play our football, we didn't match them physically & it gave them the initiative to come & attack us. We're at home, & as good as we were against Portsmouth, this is worse than Hartlepool.

"Newport didn't hurt us footballing-wise, they didn't play any football. We knew what they were going to come & do & we succumbed softly - it's unacceptable.

"They were the better team second half, & as good as we were first half, it means nothing & it's a massive opportunity missed."
