Artell:"Proud Of The Performance"

29 April 2017

David Artell gives us his post match reaction from Home Park folowing narrow 2-1 defeat.

He added: "I said to them afterwards, if you play like that every week next season then we will be top 7 minimum. That is based on the hard work they produced and the creativity they showed in the final third. We were top drawer in the first half and they didn't look like scoring, so that is why it hurts a lot but I'm also a proud manager this evening."

"I think the fans who came down here, and they were brilliant again for us, could appreciate how well they played. They applauded them off at the end and rightly so, because our  players have given their all but a defeat is a defeat and they are devastated in there. The manner of the defeat is hard to take because I felt we deserved something but we have had worse return journeys because there were a lot of positives to take from it.

"They kept going and scored the goals to put them top of the league and we congratulated them on that.

"To be their credit they changed their tactics and put the big lad on and went even more direct. They asked questions of us but I didn't think they were going to score. We stood up to them but they have continued to put the ball into our box and two chances have dropped for them. The first one has gone through to him and he (Taylor) has taken it well. The second is a free header but credit to Derek, he has taken advantage of our lack of height back there and the fact that we have centre-halves missing through injury.

The Crewe Alexandra boss was pleased with the overall performance and felt his hard working players deserved more on the day. Following the 2-1 loss at Home Park, Artell told the club's official web-site: "To a man they were terrific and I felt we deserved more from the game from the way we played. They are going up and you wouldn't have known which of us were in the first half. We dominated the play in that first half and the only criticism I have is that we didn't score more than the one goal we did.

David Artell says his Crewe Alexandra side were rather unfortunate not to get something from a performance that merited more on the South Coast. The Railwaymen had deservedly gone in at the break ahead thanks to James Jones' splendid volley after just six minutes, but to their credit, the spirited Pilgrims fought back to win it in the final 15 minutes thanks to goals from Ryan Taylor and sub Nathan Blissett.
