Artell On Blackpool Comeback

18 February 2017

David Artell gives us his post match reaction from Bloomfield Road

David Artell praised the spirit of his Crewe Alexandra players after they staged a tremendous second half comeback to pick up a deserved point at Blackpool. The Railwaymen conceded two poor goals from our point of view in the first half but goals from Chris Dagnall and Ollie Turton’s first of the season saw it end 2-2 and give Crewe seven points from our last three matches.

After the comeback, Artell said: "We shouldn’t have been 2-0 down, that’s the first thing. I’ve told them that, no ranting and raving, but there was nothing in it.

"From the 46th minute there was only one team going to win the game and we were 2-0 down.

"It was a disappointing first goal to concede, a few players could have done better. The second was another soft goal against Crewe, and we have to cut that out. I thought we defended quite well aside from that.

"Ben Garratt made a couple of terrific saves which gave us a shot in the arm. They were their two other chances, and it gave us a platform to get something out of the game.

"I thought (George) Cooper and (Callum) Cooke were the best players on the pitch by a distance, our first goal was down to them really. Four in three is a big turnaround for Chris Dagnall, he’s an excellent box player and I hope we continue to see that.

"It was a great ping from Ben (Nugent), a great knockdown and Turts (Oliver Turton) gets his rewards for hard work and running. It was a great finish too.

"I told Alex Kiwomya he’d score the winner today, and he very nearly did. But at 2-0 down would you take a draw? This feels more like a victory and we roll into another home game three unbeaten.

"The dressing room knows it’s only one point but it feels better than that and that’s important, in terms of where we have been. To get seven points out of nine."

On the supporters, Artell added: "Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. I came here last week with Blackpool v Crawley and you could hear a pin drop.

"We brought hundreds and hundreds and I can’t praise them highly enough, at 2-0 they were singing, and I like to think the lads rewarded them.

"I like to think it was a good performance all round, the fans played to part. I made sure the lads went over to thank them at the end.

"I’d like to think that type of vociferous support will be with us at Gresty Road too, which we want to make a fortress."
