Artell: "Pleased But Disappointed In Equal Measure"

14 January 2017

David Artell gives his post match reaction following 2-1 defeat

He added: "We will look to improve the intensity in training so we can take that into the games and basically do what Luton did. That is why they are in the play-offs."

"They are a bit fragile and we should expect that after winning two in 21 games but we will crack it. We have to crack it and we will work hard to crack it. Winning is a habit and we have got to get back to doing it. We are under no illusions what is ahead of us.

"We had chances in the first half and could have put them to the sword a bit before they equalised. After that our intensity dropped and and it does become hard to play against 10 men. Our intensity has to be better for longer and we can improve the quality in the final third. All that adds up to a 2-1 loss.

"We were a bit naive and a bit gun-ho and got caught out for their goals but they will learn from that. It didn't help them scoring a minute before half time for obvious reasons. It's fine margins in football and it was the same today and I am pleased with the performance but disappointed as well.

Following a defeat in his first game in charge, Artell told the club's official web-site: "Luton kept the ball better than us in the second half and that was the bottom line. It is unusual to say that with Crewe involved but I thought that was the case. They had good game management and although we huffed and puffed we couldn't quite find that goal. On another day, we would have possibly had the rub of the green and one would have dropped for us, but we have got to make our own luck. I've told the players that. We need to improve and our intensity has to be better. We were very good for 40 minutes or so and I thought we were the better side in the first half.

David Artell says he was 'pleased but disappointed' after his Crewe Alexandra gave their all but couldn't quite secure a point for their efforts against a very good Luton Town side. Nathan Jones' side coped with being a man down following Alan Sheehan's red card for two bookable offences and they claimed all three points after Jake Gray tucked home a 69th minute winner after Danny Hylton had kept a move away close to the Crewe by-line.
