Five games, five defeats, 13 goals conceded – the most in the Football League – and bottom of League One after their worst start for more than 30 years.
The Alex have registered the least number of shots on target in League One so far this season, and a Billy Waters attempt in the 66th minute on Saturday ended a run of 156 minutes of league football without forcing the opposition keeper in to making a save.
One thing the Alex can't continue to do is start games as poorly as they have the last two, after another abject and lethargic opening 45 minutes at the Priestfield.
Another worry will have been the standard of opposition that blew Crewe away in the opening 45. This was not a promotion favourite or one of the league's more fancied sides, but Gillingham, a team seen by many as likely to be in the lower reaches of the table.

Crewe Alexandra’s miserable start to their League One season continued with a fifth defeat on the spin, going down 2-0 at Gillingham.
First-half goals from Bradley Dack and Cody McDonald left boss Steve Davis’ men empty handed at Priestfield Stadium, but in truth it was a game they deserved little from.
Dack’s looped effort on 18 minutes and a McDonald’s bundled strike on the half-time whistle was enough to condemn the visitors to another disappointing defeat that leaves them marooned at the foot of the table.
Too often the Railwaymen gave the ball away cheaply to their hosts and the lack of a goal threat that has been a running theme so far this campaign was once again evident.

Gillingham coasted to a victory over Crewe at Priestfield on Saturday.
First half goals from Bradley Dack and Cody McDonald put the Gills incharge.
The hosts also bossed the second half but were unable to add to their goal tally.
Peter Taylor made four changes to the team which started the League Cup game against Newcastle on Tuesday night.
Joe Martin was one of those four, returning to the starting XI from a thigh injury.
Crewe had won on their last four visits to Priestfield, scoring 13 goals in the process, but they had lost their opening four League 1 games. It was soon to be five.
The Gills started Saturday’s match the stronger and Taylor’s men bossed the game from start to finish.
