Matchday Guide|Gillingham (A)

28 March 2024

Crewe Alexandra will aim to further their promotion ambitions when they visit Gillingham today (Friday, 3pm).

Lee Bell’s men start the game sitting fifth in League Two - just six points above the eighth-placed Gills who will be bidding to close the gap.

The Opposition

Gillingham are only outside the Play-Off places on goal difference, although Crawley, who sit above them, have two games in hand.

The Gills are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the division, with just 39 goals from their 40 matches played so far this season. But they are eight unbeaten at home.

The Gaffer

Stephen Clemence became manager of Gillingham after taking over from Neil Harris in November.

A former midfielder, he made nearly 250 appearances in the top flight for clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City and Leicester City. He has coached at Sunderland, Hull, Aston Villa and West Brom.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: “He plays a really good brand of football and he has turned it round in terms of how they play.  I am sure he is pleased with how the team looks and they are a real threat.”

Stephen Clemence: “It will be a difficult opponent. They have had a good season; they play good football and so do we, so I expect it to be a good game.”

Head-to-Head

The two teams have met 56 times. Crewe have won one more time than their opponents, with 24 wins for the Railwaymen and 23 wins for the Gills. The remaining nine have ended in draws.

Conor O’Riordan and Joe White got the goals for the Alex as Crewe won 2-0 at Mornflake Stadium against today’s opposition earlier this season.

Match Officials

Tom Reeves will be the man in charge of today’s clash. Hugh Gilroy and Gary Maskell will accompany him as assistants. James Vallence will be the fourth official.

Reeves has handed out 83 yellow cards and four red cards in the 26 games he has taken charge of so far this season.
