Crewe Alexandra Women stalwart Ragdale retires

28 April 2024

Crewe Alexandra Women's Beth Ragdale will retire from football after the final game of the season this afternoon (Sunday, 2pm).

The commanding central defender, who has spent 17 years with the club over two spells, has decided to call time on her career at the age of 38.

Ragdale played a pivotal role in the club's first ever promotion to The FA Women's National League in 2016 and made more than 300 appearances for Crewe.

Head Coach Matt Fisher said: "We owe Raggers so much and she owes us nothing.

"She has served this club with honesty, loyalty and professionalism and has often put her body on the line quite literally. No words can describe what she has done for this club and she leaves a legend."

Ragdale, who also lifted three county cups with the Alex, broke through the youth ranks in 2000 after being spotted playing for her school team as the only female.

She soon earned a move to Everton Women and stayed there for three seasons, winning England Under-19 caps along the way.

In 2006 Ragdale signed a professional contract with Icelandic side Keflavik, and helped them to their highest ever league finish as well as a cup final.

Ragdale returned to England, and Crewe Alexandra, in 2007. A leader on and off the pitch, her power, determination and football intelligence made her a key player over many years.

She said: "It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from football. I've had an incredible career which has seen me represent my local club, my country and meet some special people."

Crewe will host Blackpool in their final North West Regional League fixture of the season, at Crewe Alexandra in the Community, Shavington.
