Crewe Alexandra will aim to further their Play-Off ambitions when they host Wrexham at Mornflake Stadium today (Saturday, 12.30pm).

A victory in the final home game of the regular season would secure a top-seven finish in League Two - but they face a stiff test against the already-promoted Welsh outfit.

The Opposition

Wrexham earned a place in League One last weekend after their 6-0 win against Forest Green Rovers.

That means they have made it back-to-back promotions in a stunning period for the club.

However, Stockport County have clinched the title, so Wrexham can only fight for the runners-up berth.

The Gaffer

Vastly-experienced Phil Parkinson was appointed Wrexham boss in summer 2021.

He led the club to promotion last season as they surpassed 100 points in the National League, and has now made it two successes in as many years.

Previously, Parkinson has managed Sunderland, Bolton Wanderers and Bradford City in an impressive career.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: “We have to get back to the standards we have set throughout the season. My message to the fans would be to really get behind the players. Mistakes will happen throughout the game from both teams but we will have a right go.

Phil Parkinson: “We are delighted to get the club back in League One. We can have a real sit back over the next few weeks and review where the squad is, and what we need to do to make us competitive next year.”

Head-to-Head

Crewe Alexandra and Wrexham have met 124 times in their history. Wrexham have won the most encounters with 43 wins compared to Crewe’s 42.

The reverse fixture was a 3-3 thriller in Wales earlier in the season. Christopher Long, Mickey Demetriou and Shilow Tracey scored for the Alex.

Match Officials

Sebastian Stockbridge is the man in charge of today’s clash. Graeme Fyvie and Alex Gray will accompany him as assistants. Marc Edwards will be the fourth official.

Stockbridge has taken charge of 28 games this season and handed out 130 yellow cards and one red card.

The Railwaymen Bar & Lounge will open at 10.30am for Crewe supporters.

End-of-season awards will be presented at The Insure Life Alex All Together 2024 event on Tuesday, April 23.

Crewe Alexandra players will leave the field of play after the final whistle. They will return to greet fans and thank them for their loyal support shortly afterwards.
Please do not encroach onto the playing surface. Any disruption may make it unsafe for the players and staff to return to the pitch area.
Increased road traffic is expected on the day so please allow time to complete your journey safely. Additional train services have been provided to aid in fans travelling to and from the game.
Fans will see an increased Police presence in the local area. Mounted Police will be in attendance in and around the stadium.
At this time, there are no planned road closures, but this is subject to change on the day, dependant on the circumstances. More than 9,000 at Mornflake Stadium
Cooney sees controversial red

Crewe Alexandra were beaten 3-0 by Wrexham in the final home game of the regular League Two season.

Goals from Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin and Andy Cannon earned the already-promoted visitors all three points at Mornflake Stadium.

The game was shrouded in controversy when referee Seb Stockbridge elected not to send off James McClean after an aggressive coming together with Aaron Rowe.

And he further incensed Alex fans when he dismissed Ryan Cooney in the second half.

It meant, at the end of the game, The Railwaymen stayed in fifth with one game remaining at Colchester United next weekend.

Lee Bell made one change to the side that lost to Grimsby, with Joel Tabiner replacing Charlie Kirk.

Christopher Long and Shilow Tracey were back from injury to be amongst the subs.

Wrexham, who were without injured duo James Jones and George Evans, started with fellow ex-Crewe man Arthur Okonkwo, while Callum McFadzean was on the bench.

Crewe looked the more likely early on, with some good combination play getting them into some good positions.

But the visitors hit the front on 24 minutes when Mullin whipped in cross and Palmer’s deft finish found the back of the net.

Palmer’s dipping volley was easily held by keeper Max Stryjek, but neither keeper had much to do despite some entertaining football.

There was a flashpoint when Rowe fouled McClean, and the Wrexham man reacted aggressively.

Both players were booked and, when play restarted, Mullin raced behind the home defence and lobbed the keeper for 2-0.

McClean did not reemerge for the second half, as Parkinson recognised the fortune of still having 11 men.

And the game was over as a contest on 55 minutes when Ryan Cooney handled the ball after being shoved in the back. The referee surprised the whole stadium by showing the defender a red card.

Wrexham completed the scoring on 61 minutes when Cannon showed clever footwork in the box and finished calmly.

Charlie Finney headed over for Crewe, while Stryjek made a couple of good stops at the other end before the final whistle.
